Here's Our Top 6 Tips For Packing Your Essentials & Moving Home...

Updated: Oct 10, 2022

So the big day is coming soon. You've been spending weeks, if not months, speaking with solicitors and estate agents, but finally you're a few days away from the big house move and about to start packing.

According to comparemymove.com, "Research states that “more than 1 in 10 people” will experience “a disabling anxiety disorder at some stage in their life” and moving house can help worsen these disorders."

At BYPAK, we want to take the stress of moving home away from you so that you can relax, enjoy the house move and focus on all the positives instead of worrying about what could go wrong. Below is our top tips for moving home, what you need to do and what to avoid doing!

1. Before You Start

Our number one tip is not to leave everything till the last minute. You don't need to wait and leave everything to the day before you move home. Spend some time thinking about what you need to take with you, how you are going to package fragile items and booking transport for example, so that on the day of your move, you have everything covered.

2. Plan Ahead

Similar to #1, it's really important that you plan ahead and think about all the aspects of moving home. Make sure you spend evenings after work wisely, by going through a room at a time and boxing your items up in categories of what you're packing together. You want to make sure that when you're unpacking, it's easy for you to put things together by keeping them together at the start.

Make sure you have enough time booked off from work so that you can spend as much time as you need to getting things sorted ahead of time. Speak with removal companies, hire vans, ask family. Whatever your plan is for the big day, make sure that you've spoken with everyone well in advance so that they know what to do come the big moving day.

3. Better Boxes = Better Moving Experience

Spend time thinking about how you are going to pack your items. Whether they are fragile glasses, clothes or your treasured games consoles, it's important to make sure that you securely package your items up so that when being moved, there is less chance of something breaking. By using better quality boxes, you reduce the risk of one of your most valuable items breaking while in transit from old home to new house. TIP - BYPAK boxes are a premium quality moving box, designed with performance in mind so that your goods can be moved safely and packed securely.

4. Smart Packing

One of the most important part of packing to move home is making sure that you've got the right items in the right boxes! You wouldn't want to put heavy items in a thin box, or small items in a large box with lots of space left. Consider that heavy items should be in smaller boxes, so that they are easier to move around and reduce the risk of sustaining injuries due to heavy lifting. Also, label each box with its room and contents. This will make your unpacking a lot easier and when emptying your car/van into your new home, those people helping you know where boxes are going without having to ask each time or check what's inside.

5. Don't be afraid to ask for help!

We can often feel like we can't ask for help when it's about something personal, so we often try and take on too much workload, leading to stress and not being able to do the job entirely. Your family and friends are there to help you through the good and bad, and they'd more than likely be delighted that you've thought to ask them for help on such an important day!

If you can't get help from family or friends, speak to removal companies. They are experts in helping to get you moved homes and are often competitively priced for a 1-2 person and van hire. No matter how you choose to move home, make sure to ask for help and take the stress away from trying to do too much by yourself.

6. Remember, it's an exciting day!

With everything that goes into moving home, it can be easy to forget that moving home is an incredibly exciting experience. If you're feeling stressed or anxious, try and remember the positives of why you are moving home. They might include...

  • A fresh start in a new area

  • Relocating closer to work to reduce your commuting time

  • Moving into your first home with your partner

  • A bigger and better home (or your new house has that dream garden!)

  • Moving closer to friends or family
