Moving house is a really exciting time, but it's never an easy process. Whether you're speaking with utility companies or removal companies, there's plenty to do in advance of the big day. When it comes to packing, it's useful to know some tips to make the process much easier. To help, we've listed a few tips below...
Start Packing Up Well In Advance
As most house moves fall within a chain, there isn't really a 'set time' when you need to start packing. Our advice though is once you have your exchange date, spend some time working out what you use most, what you use least, and start planning around packing up as early as you can ahead of time. By planning ahead, it'll stop you from struggling to get everything done nearer to your moving date.
Start With Rooms and Items You Use Least
Following on, it's really handy to start packing those items or rooms which you use the least. After all, you don't want to get out of the shower and be struggling to find the hair dryer, do you?
Spend time thinking about which rooms to focus on. From there, go through those rooms and pick out the items which you use least (or completely covered in dust!). You'll quickly find that you'll get a lot of items packed quite quickly and leave out the items which you need to keep out while you wait for the moving day.
Ask Yourself, Do You Really Need That?
When you're going through those rooms and picking out items that you are packing up early, it is worth thinking about whether you actually need those items. For some things such as photos or decorative pieces, you may wish to keep them. However, we all have those items where we put them in a place with the best intentions of using them but a few years later, they're covered in dust and you'd forgot all about them.
If you decide that you don't need to take certain items with you, consider boxing them all up and taking them to a charity shop or recycling centre. You could also look to sell them online on sites such as eBay or Vinted to earn some money for them. As the saying goes, "one mans trash is another mans treasure."
Don't Buy Until You're In
When you're in the build-up for moving home, a lot of us decide to go shopping to find new things for the home. After all, you want to put your own stamp on your new home and what better than something new?
However, our advice would be to hold off on buying certain new items until you've moved in, unpacked and perhaps even after decorating. Not only does it reduce the risk of your shiny new glasses set getting broke in the removal van and reduce the costs upfront of moving in, it also helps you to focus on your packing of what you already own and reduces the amount of items you need to worry about packing up before you move.
Make A List, Check It Twice
Before you put that last strip of tape on to finish packing, it's really important that you have thought about all the possible items you need to take with you. They might include...
Electronics, gadgets and toys
Clothing
Food from the fridge, freezer and cupboards (Get freezer/cool bags)
Medicine
Pet beds, toys and bowls
No matter the item, by going through each room and thinking about what you need to take with you and writing down that list, it will make sure that when you get the keys to your new home, you haven't missed anything off before you start taking those boxes into your new home.
